Shelter News from Shorty the Cat's Point of View

You're invited to attend TLC's unbirthday party

Hi!

"Shorty! Shorty wake up! We have a deadline to meet!"
HUMPH! Sleeping? I was just meditating, my best thoughts come to me when my eyes are closed. Anyway my column is coming along just fine. See I have the headline done!
"By the way Shorty I was meaning to talk to you about that. Explain if you will, what in the world is this unbirthday party all about?"
We are holding an unbirthday party celebrating TLC's 36 years helping thousands of animals throughout the years, and with an an unbirthday party, everyone just stays home, while raising money for the animals!
"Shorty I think you have finally lost it. I think you should have stayed away from that catnip! That is not a party and it certainly can't help raise funds for the animals!"
Listen it makes purrrfectly good sense. With an unbirthday party it saves our friends from having to run out to buy new shoes, (and 99% of the time ending up with sore feet, along with taking up precious closet space), when they could be much more comfortable in their favorite old shirt, and faded blue jeans.
"So then what?"
Instead they could donate the money they would have spent on shoes that would have hurt their feet, to the shelter, and help provide care for a homeless cat or dog. The same goes for hiring a baby sitter or having to get your hair done. The money you would have spent on those things would help provide food and medical care for the animals at TLC! An unbirthday party lets you sit back and relax, in the comfort of your own home, while you make out a check to the shelter, and you still get that great feeling knowing you're helping the animals.
"Well Shorty, now that you have explained it to me, I think your unbirthday party is a very good idea! I better hurry up and call the bakery and cancel that cake."
Oh no! No cake! That's one thing I had not planned on, me and my bright ideas. Uhoh I've gotta run! This is a dire situation that requires my full attention!

Love,

Shorty

P.S. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TLC! Hope your every wish comes true! Hmmmmn how can your wishes come true if there aren't any candles to blowout, and there aren't any candles to blowout because there's no cake! Oh what a terrible predicament!
"Okay Shorty you made a good point, I'll get back on the phone and order a small cake."
Shhhhhhhh! See, I told you I would think of something, but let's keep that between ourselves.

Urgent- Raffle prizes needed

for TLC's biggest fundraiser of the year - RAFFLEMANIA
Our rafflemania drawing will be held September 25th. To make the raffle a big success we are in need of tantalizing prizes!

The more chances we sell, the more animals we will be able to help!

What type of items are popular raffle prizes? TRIPS, JEWELRY, SPA SERVICES, GIFT CERTIFICATES for RESTAURANTS, GAS or a NIGHT on the TOWN and CASH is always popular.

We do request that the items be valued at a minimum of $100.00, and that the items be at the shelter no later than July 15th.

Let's make this rafflemania the best ever! A lot of animals are counting on us!

lovely to look at deadly to eat

When thinking about what you would like to plant in your garden, consider your pets safety. Although the plants on this list are lovely to look at they may make your pet very ill or even cause death. Here is a list of plants you might consider avoiding especially if your pet has been known to nibble on the leaves of plants:
In the fern family be especially careful where you plant these: Asparagus fern, Emerald Fern, Lace fern, and Plumosa. These plants can cause allergic dermatitis, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain.
Shrubs to watch out for are: Cycads, Heavenly bamboo, Holly, Jerusalem Cherry, Oleander, Precatory Bean, Rhododendron, Saddle Leaf Philodendron, and Yucca. Many of these shrubs can cause seizures, liver damage, gastrointestinal problems, and in some case death.
The following should also be planted out of harms way: Foxglove, Anthurium, Morning Glory, Onion, Tomato Plants, Bitter Sweet, and English Ivy. Puppies especially might think bulbs are so much fun to play with, but the majority of bulbs can be deadly including: Tulip, Narcissus, Lily of the Valley, Iris, Hyacinth, Gladiolas, Elephant Ears, Daffodil, Autumn Crocus and Amaryllis.
This is not a complete list of toxic garden plants, but these are some of the most popular that are used in our area. The term "spp" after the genus for example Amaryllis spp indicates that all species of that genus are a toxic garden plant. Something to remember next time you go to your local garden center.

craft show update

We're sorry to keep you waiting to find out how the shelter's Holiday Magic craft show went, but there were deadlines that had to be met in order to get information out about our Cosmic Bowl out.
We ran into one major obstacle with this year's craft show. We found out three weeks before the event that the Homer Township Hall was uninhabitable due to some damages it had sustained. But TLC volunteers were undaunted by this, and they said the sale must go on! Although the sale was in a new location with plenty of signs and balloons out front, we drew a goodly amount of shoppers.
A special thanks to everyone for all the effort they put into the wonderful crafts and baked goods they made. Cudos go out to Mary Ann and Amy Lukas, John Small, Kathy Przybyla, Cathy Bessette, Marian Village Residents, Phyliss Klingensmith, Wayne and Donna Holous, Maureen and Marilin Hagedorn, Judy and Maureen Hennenfent, Joyce Koehl, Clare Paskiet, Danielle Fary, Patty Robinson, Selma Carmichael, Kathy Kanak, Chris Wright, Nancy Vales, Sharon Fary, Joann Kosinski, Judy Kunkel, PJ. Fitzgerald, Judy Pell, Taryn Mc Guire, John and Michefleen Fraschetti, Mike and Carol Tully, Don and Pam Brown, Katie Ryan, Beverly and Jerry Baldwin, Dorothy Novak, Beth Manion, Lee Ann Mayr, Lila Konow, JoAnn Brown, Karen Lullo, Gina and Michael Norris, Lois Winkleman and Girl Scout Troop # 10, Norah Sarroggate, Darcy Fenoglio, Ms. Therry, Mary Pat DeGrassi, Karen Klinkal, Rosemary Adams, Lillian Teeling, Barb Gunderson, Kathleen Cannelle, Annie Coleman, Judy Swiontek and Chris Wlodarski.
We also want to thank all the volunteers who worked so hard settmg up and all the volunteers that worked the day of the sale including: Annie Coleman, Kathy Przybyla, Mary Ann and Amy Lukas, Josh Chalifoux, Phyllis Klingensmith, Clare Paskiet, Judy Kunkel, Kathy Kanak, Katie Ryan, Barb Gunderson, and Pam Brown. Everyone worked very hard to make the sale a success. We also want to thank Amanda Lamb from Healthy Connection for the massages she gave to raise money for the animals.
* We also wanted to mention that Pam Brown had a bake sale of her own prior to TLC's craft show and raised $550.00 for the shelter. Pam then went on to bake even more goodies for our sale!
What happend to items left over? Judy Kunkel became our country peddler and packed up the leftover crafts and rented a table at another craft show to raise an additional $100.00 for TLC. Thanks Judy! We hope that we did not omit anyone's name but with everything so rushed and the sale so busy, if we did leave anyone's name out it was just an oversight on our part. We do want you to know that all your hard work paid off, and the money raised helped a lot of animals at the shelter. THANK YOU!
